Ticks are very important from the biomedical point of view, by their hematophagic activity and their role in the transmission of pathogenic microorganisms to man and animals. The main goal of this work was to establish the tick species parasiting dogs in three rural localities of the Colombian Caribbean. From August to December 2006, an active search of ticks on dogs was carried out in the localities of El Campín, Sabanas del Potrero and Escobar Arriba, department of Sucre. The collected ticks were preserved into eppendorf tubes with 70% ethanol, and identified using standard morphological keys for each family. Argasid species were determined by measuring external morphological characters. Of 134 examined dogs in the three localities, 50 were found infested by ticks, representing a infestation rate of 37,3%. A total of 420 ticks were collected from dogs and identified as Rhipicephalus sanguineus, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, and Amblyomma ovale of the Ixodidae family, and Ornithodoros puertoricensis of the Argasidae family. R. sanguineus was the predominant species (92,1%) in the stages of larva, nymph and adult, following by O. puertoricensis larvae recorded in low numbers in the three regions sampled. The tick O. puertoricensis is recorded for the first time as ectoparasite of domestic dogs in America. Additionally, the presence of this tick species is confirmed in Colombia.

In recent decades the analysis of mitochondrial genes has been used for population and phylogenetic studies of ticks allowing many advances in their systematics. Mitochondrial ribosomal 16S (16S) subunit is one of the most frequently used among those genes available for tick analysis, whereas cytochrome oxidase gene 1 (COX1) has recently been used and proposed as an alternative to the traditional 16S gene marker. The main objective of the present investigation is To evaluate the usefulness of 16S and COX1 in genetic studies of ticks by analyzing sequences of three species commonly found in the Caribbean region of Colombia.

The agents of the genus Babesia (Piroplasma: Babesiidae) are hemoparasites protozoa transmitted by ticks of the family Ixodidae during blood meal. In Colombia, the few studies of ticks, have focused on aspects of pest control in veterinary medicine and its impact on livestock, with very few contributions to the study of these ectoparasites as potential vectors of zoonotic diseases. In this paper, distribution models for tick species as R. (Boophilus) microplus, D. nitens, and R. sanguineus to estimate risk areas ixodológico in the Caribbean region were created. This distribution modeling was built by algorithms such as Maximum Entropy, and implemented in 3.3.3k Maxent program, taking the geographical points where there has been the presence of tick species and environmental variables to describe the ecological space used by each of them. All projections geographic distribution models generated were processed in QGIS 2.8.2 program. It was obtained as a result that some areas of the department of Cordoba can probably be these tick species and absent in places like the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. This is the first step in determining which areas are likely to find potential vectors of zoonotic agents of the genus Babesia.
