The aim of this paper is to present the main results of a research oriented to characterize nutritionally, physicochemically and microbiologically three organic fertilizers to be used in agricultural ecosystems of pastures located in the Subregion Sabanas of Sucre Department, Colombia. Th ree organic fertilizers were prepared (chicken manure compost, cattle manure compost, and worm compost) with native materials from the zone of study. Nutritional, physico-chemical and microbiological characterization of each one of those composts was made. To relate the nutritional, physico-chemical and microbiological parameters of the fertilizers, multivariate techniques (principal components analysis or simple correlation analysis) and the statistical program R, 2009 were used. Th e results show that chicken manure compost has a bigger nutritional contribution, a major retention of moisture and high volatilization.
Chicken manure compost and worm compost show the lowest density (0.40g/cm3). The three fertilizers have concentrations of Cd, Cr, Hg, Ni and Pb below the maximum permissible levels for the 5167 NTC 2004 and Cu and Zn concentrations below the maximum allowed by the European Community (Royal Decree 824 of 2005, Spain). The diversity of microbial communities in cattle manure compost is higher fungi and bacteria. Nutritional content, easiness of release and physico-chemical and microbiological characteristics determine the quality of an organic fertilizer; so they must be evaluated before its application in any agroecosystem.
