In the present study it was determined the variability of the effects of burning on some mechanical properties of vertic soils. This activity is one of the oldest performed practices at the agricultural level in the coast and the country. Farmers lack of sensibility in the management of agricultural practices, natural resources and the environment. These properties are very important because they help the soil development; if these suffer variations by activities performed by humans, the same humans would be affected as well as the society and natural resources. This study was done in three municipalities of the department of Sucre (Los Palmitos, Colosó, and Sincelejo) which present soils with vertic characteristics which are more abundant in the Caribean region and has been deteriorating through the years by the application of bad agricultures practices. Therefore, in this work we studied the variation caused by high temperatures that a soil could reach during a given time of exposure to such “burning of surface coverages” and to determine how some mechanical properties vary in these soils. This study was done taking samples before and after of to be burned at depths of 5, 10 and 20 centimeters of the surface. Some mechanical properties as texture, consistency, moisture content, unit weight, linear and volumetric extension coefficient were examined in the three study areas. Once the results have been obtained, we proceeded to make the respective comparisons through statistical test of Wilcoxon, with two treatments to be evaluated, burning and not burning. Thanks to this we could raise the next hypotheses; HO: Controlled burned does not affect the physical-mechanical properties of soil, Ha: Controlled burned affect at least one of the physical-mechanical properties of soil. The results obtained of the properties assessed showed an increase of soil bulk density due to high cohesion processes that suffer these materials when subject to burning. The moisture content decreases by the high temperatures. Statistically the texture reported significant differences, noticing the decrease of percentages of sand and silt, but Caracterización de los efectos de la quema en algunas propiedades físico-mecánicas de un vertisol en el Departamento de Sucre (Sucre-Colombia) 17 increasing the percentage of clay by the increase in temperature to which the soil was submitted. It was observed in the COEL and COEV a decrease in the values due to a decline of the clay activity produced by the burning. According to the above the limits of consistency also decreased as a consequence of the burning and the decrease of the organic matter. When applying the statistical test of Wilcoxon for these properties it was observed that, there were significant differences for the texture, moisture content, unit weight, consistency limits, the COEL and COEV, indicating that the controlled burning affect at least one of the physical-mechanical properties of soil. With these results it can be stated that the “controlled burning” affects some the physical-mechanical properties of the soil. For this reason, it becomes absolutely necessary to continue to carry out investigations which have the objective to apply alternative soil management practices and to create sensitivity in the peasants and farmers to use methods that go in hand with the productive capacity of soil and sustainability of these resources that are so important to humanity as are the soil, the water and the organic matter.
