In the Burseraceae family, secondary metabolites of the triterpenoid type and phenols "flavonoids, coumarins and several lignans" have been found (Ruiz and Susunaga, 2000), where the metabolites belonging to the group of polyphenols are characterized as being antioxidant agents with a high capacity to capture free radicals (Flores, 2011). That is why in the present work we evaluated the antioxidant activity of the methanol extracts in methanol and methanol fractions of the bark and dry leaf of the species Protium aracouchini, where it was found that the methanol fraction of bark has a high effectiveness free radical scavenger with an EC50 of 8.07 μg / mL, while in the test with the radical ABTS the methanol fraction presented an EC50 of 2.57 μg / mL, and in the protective action of ß-carotene the extract The total methanol content of the leaf showed the best activity with an EC50 of 15.63 μg / mL. In addition to measuring the antioxidant activity, the content of total phenols (eq μg GA / g of extract) and total flavonoids (eq μg Q / g of extract) was also estimated, with the methanol fraction of the cortex showing a concentration of 8.71034483 eq μg GA / g of acid extract, and 1.73874717 eq μg Q / g of extract. From the data obtained in this research, the species Protium aracouchini (Burseraceae) reported for the first time in the department of Sucre, Colombia, is a promising source of antioxidant agents.
